This photo was taken during one of my brief excursions into Cambodia. The girl is a "war orphan" who assisted in the care of smaller children in her little village. Two boys at Trung My Tay Village - Hoc Mon Province - The building in the background is a typical "home"in this area of the world. My buddy Ryan and I caught these two Vietnamese boys fishing in an open sewer trench on Tan Son Nhut. Their story titled "The Benjo Ditch Fishermen" is in my book "Land of Childhood's Fears".
This is a typical "farmhouse" in Hoc Mon Province - specifically in Trung My Tay village. These straw (thatched) huts are open to the elements and the ravenous bugs that swarm in droves.Children assembled at the medical aid station at Trung My Tay. These small buildings were the only medical facilities many of these people ever see.Sampans are ubiquitous on Vietnam's rivers. Some, like this one, are fitted with small outboard motors. Boats like this were used to smuggle arms and supplies to the VC and NVAThe Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC - As far as I'm concerned, the money could have been better spent helping the vets who came home maimed and traumatized.

The "short guy" was ubiquitous in Vietnam. It was art that conveyed the message that a GI only had a few days left before he was rotated Stateside.

This boy was the son of one of the housekeepers in the 1876 Comm. Squadron compound.

This little chapel - little more than a tin roof supported by a very rickety-looking structure of rough-hewn lumber, was the only place of Christian worship for miles. Catholic Vietnamese nuns ran a small "orphanage" nearby. The church "building" doubled as our MASH unit when we arrived.

The Pulitzer Prize winning photo of Kim Phuc - who was caught in a Napalm bombing raid as she prayed in a temple. Kim survived, and had to have numerous operations to repair damaged muscles, and have plastic surgery. The heat from the incindiaries burned the clothes off her body. This boy was found wandering alone in Saigon. I managed to get him back to his parents after he spent the night on base in our barracks.

Photo of a Vietnamese boy burned with napalm after the burns had (somewhat) healed. Note the evidence of 4th degree burns have permanently etched lines across his body
