"For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: For he wrote of me. But if ye believe not his writings, how shall ye believe my words?" - John 5:46, 47

          The documentary hypothesis "...is prevalent in modern Biblical circles... is known as... J.E.D.P. hypothesis. Using literary criticism as its basis for argument, this hypothesis sets forth the theory that the Pentateuch (Genesis through Deuteronomy) was not written by Moses, as the Bible claims, but was completed years after Moses died. Those adhering to the documentary hypothesis teach that the first five books of the Bible were written close to 1,000 years after Moses died, and were the result of a process of writing, re-writing, and compiling by various anonymous authors and redactors".^[i]

          The referenced volume offers a good explanation o the JEDP (J = Yahweh or Jehovah, E = Elohist, D = Deuteronomic code, P = Priestly writer) hypothesis. There is no need here to discuss this hypothesis at length, as the existence of ELS (Equidistant Letter Sequence) "codes" all throughout the Pentateuch (or Torah), certainly ties all of the Old Testament books together, since one Jot (pronounced "yott") or tittle^[ii] out of place, would completely destroy the structure or physical integrity of the "coded" words and phrases that comprise the underlying messages.

          These ELS "codes", discovered by Israeli mathematician Elija Rips in 1991, and documented by authors Michael Drosnin of the Wall Street Journal, Grant Jefferies, Chuck Missler, et al., are empirical proof that the Bible is an integrated whole, and that its contents are literally "God breathed". My background in the military as a Cryptographic Systems Specialist leaves me with only awe and amazement, the more I study this "phenomenon". It also, leaves the documentary hypothesis in the trashcan, because for the ELS codes to exist at all, the text in the Torah must be one integrated, and perfectly transmitted whole.

          The ELS codes not only exist in the Torah, but also in all of thr Old Testament books as well. Several conclusions can be drawn from the empirical data, but one thing is patently obvious:, What is contained in these codes could not be mere coincidence; it could not have been put there by men (human beings) by any process science or linguistics is aware of, even with the aid of modern supercomputers (the Cray™ Y/MPC-120), capable of tens of billions of calculations per second; the prophetic content of these codes notwithstanding. Only two conclusions can be drawn from a strictly scientific (methodological) analysis:

          #1.     Since we know that the Old Testament (Genesis to Malachi) was not written by a single (human) author, and that all of the Old Testament books contain these ELS codes, either all of the authors were familiar with the technology that enabled them to edit into their writings, certain words and phrases pertaining to events thousands of years into the future, or they were all inspired to write what they wrote by a common source, whose knowledge about the future puts him outside the constraints of linear time.

          #2.     The whole Bible (Genesis to Revelation) was written by a single author, and after copies of the original scrolls were made, the originals were destroyed. This single author was able to predict future events with 100% accuracy, which is statistically and absolutely impossible to have happened by "coincidence" or "chance". This lone author must have worked for billions of years at human speed to compile this work, and write it on parchment or animal skins with lampblack (carbon-based ink) and a duck feather (quill pen) as teams of scholars, scientists, and technicians - even with the fastest computers on the planet, cannot even approach the duplication of the ELS codes, never mind what the codes contain.

          These codes are highly structured and complex "multi-level" ELS encryptions which are impossible to duplicate, and there is no explanation for the presence of names, places, events, and dates found in these codes.

          If the documentary hypothesis was true, then all of the so-called "various authors" ascribed to have done Moses' work, would have had to be A) Familiar with some technology which enabled them to construct multiple "levels" of ELS codes into a very short passage, while retaining the continuity and eloquence of the text, and B) Have the ability to see thousands of years into the future, in order to be able to put into the" codes", the names, places, and events; persons and cities and things that did not yet exist, and construct this message system in such a way as to be found at a time when the very technology causing the Word to be scoffed at, would reveal irrefutable proof of its divine origin, and conceal the messages in such a way that they could not be used for occult purposes (divination) which would conflict with the (clear text) Biblical prohibitions against fortune-telling and such.

          I have my own "documentary hypothesis", and it is the traditional view that the Bible is "God-breathed" (1 Timothy 3:16). This view is based on my own study of the ELS codes, and I believe my theory is valid prima facie', based upon the known facts.

For "various" authors, editors, and redactors to have, without divine inspiration, compiled the Pentateuch (Torah), the Old Testament, or the Bible as a whole, is patently and blatantly ridiculous and absurd. Such corroboration as would have been required to maintain the integrity of the clear (readable) text - never mind making the ELS codes prophetic - which is required for the structural integrity of the codes, would have been impossible. One letter - just one - added to or deleted from the original Masoretic Hebrew text, and there would no longer be an "Equidistant Letter Sequence".

The Torah being put together from "bits here, pieces there" over a thousand years or more by "several authors" as postulated by the documentary hypothesis and still maintain ELS integrity, is difficult to imagine. I believe such a complex task as the construction of multiple "levels" of ELS coding (again, ignoring the fact that the words and phrases are prophetic), could not have been done by more than one author - human author, that is.

The same sort of "multiple author" theory has also been expostulated for the book of Isaiah, and it is called the "Dueter-Isaiah theory". Since the book Of Isaiah also contains these ELS codes. This theory is also wrong for the same reasons as the Documentary Hypothesis is wrong - not to mention that John 12:38 - 41 clearly ascribes the authorship of the book of Isaiah to one man - Isaiah.

          Author Josh McDowell in his excellent book, does not use the "Bible Codes" in his apologetics to dispel these "multiple author" theories. However, these structures do exist, and it leaves no room for doubt in the mind of someone who understands even basic cryptography, that there is really only ONE "author" for the entire Bible - a God who exists outside of our senses, and beyond the capability of our "science" to record via the hand of Man, every jot and tittle - verbatim. This could not be done by a man, or a team of men - even with the aid of supercomputers. We need to examine the evidence, and rethink our perspective about the Bible.
