EcoMeter

Hypermiling efforts are really just guesswork unless the results of what you are doing (or NOT doing) behind the wheel can be instantly evaluated. The ECO Meter or any of the equivalents listed in the product links below, provide real-time evaluation of your fuel economy (among other things. One of these meters will cost you about what it costs for half a tank of gas, and you can expect to save enough gas money to pay for the meter by eliminating wasteful habits like speeding up to a red light, etc., in no more than 2,000 miles of driving. Everything else past that, is money in your pocket.

I looked at all the devices available for this purpose, and chose the ECO Meter primarily for its cool-looking, easy to read display. The others are primarily numerical, and who needs to crunch numbers in their head when they're driving? The ECO Meter displays numbers, but has a circular, colored display that advances clockwise from red to yellow to green as your instant fuel economy improves.

The ECO Meter setup is simple; you plug it into the OBD II Port (On_Board Diagnostics) on your vehicle, calibrate it for the Liter Displacement of your engine, and you're good-to-go. You track your actual fuel consumption average for 200 miles, and then "tweak" the settings on the meter to make it dead-on accurate.

All these types of meters require OBD II ports which are on most vehicles manufactured 1997 or later.

This is what the EcoMeter Model # 9105 looks like close-up. When you first install it, you must program it for the engine displacement you have, and within 250 miles, you can "tweak" it to conform to the actual gas mileage you experience. From then on, you will have a real-time display of average gas mileage or instantaneous gas mileage at the push of a button. Easy hook-up to the vehicle's OBD Port.

EcoMeter installed on the driver's side dashboard of my Jeep Wrangler.

EcoMeteron the dashboard of my 1997 Jeep Wrangler. The unit comes with a "no-drill" mounting system that uses strong double-sided tape. If you have treated your dashboard with Wipe-New, nothing will stick to it, and you may have to use the two small, self-tapping screws to secure it to the dash. The OBD cable is long enough to reach almost anywhere.

Photo shows the ECO Meter with the engine off.

As soon as you turn the engine on, the ECO Meter  boots up, then displays one of four "data screens" you have previously selected. Shown here is the INSTANT MPG display, showing 0 MPG because the vehicle is idling at a red light.

As you accelerate and reach "cruising speed", the ECO Meter  "dial" moves clockwise and changes from red / yellow, to green, with more green segments indicating better fuel economy at the instant moment. The meter in this photo indicates that if I maintain the current speed, and nothing else changes (like going up or down a hill) my Jeep is getting 21.7 Miles to the gallon.

Of course, when you stop, accelerate, down-shift, the numbers (and your average MPG) will change. You can push a button to display Average MPG, Tachometer, or Speedometer.
