Dual OBD Port
1996 and later
model vehicles are equipped with an
On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) port,
which enables a service technician to connect a Diagnostic Monitor
in order to retrieve engine diagnostics data for the vehicle.
The OBD Port
connects to the vehicle's "computer", and this enables a variety of
devices to be connected, such as an EcoMeter™,
Bluetooth devices that send vehicle data to your Smartphone, and a
unique device from Progressive Insurance called "Snapshot®".
shows you how to modify two
OBD Port extension cables (available on eBay) to make a Dual (or
triple) OBD port. So long as connected devices do not exceed the
port's ability to supply power, and are not WRITING data to the
vehicle's "computer", it is possible to connect more than two
devices to the OBD port simultaneously.
When you want
to use two or more OBD-Port devices, simply buy as many
OBD Port extension cables and connect them in parallel as shown
in the above diagram. Be careful to match the color-coded wires, as
a misconnection can cause real trouble. Strip 1/2" of insulation from
the wires of an intact cable, and wrap and solder the extra port
wires to the stripped portion, using
Teflon Tape Thread
polish to insulate each connection. If you use standard electrical
tape, the joints will be humongous.
L-Shaped, 3/4" wide pieces of brass or aluminum to fashion a bracket
for the extra port sockets, and use
to fasten them to the brackets. Find a place under the dashboard to
fasten the brackets and plug in your OBD components (photo above).
Plug the male
end of your adapter into the OBD Port, and make sure all of your
devices are working (photo left).
If you only need TWO OBD Ports, or don't want
to solder connections, another alternative to building your
own is to buy an
OBDII Port Splitter from Amazon. You will still
need to secure the two female sockets somewhere (as shown in the
flux when soldering electronic connections, heat the connection
properly and do not move the connection until the joint cools.
"Cold" solder joints can be intermittent, causing very erratic
and unreliable operation of your equipment. See
OBD Port extension cables on eBay.
